Working with Education

Both national and local research tells us that Young Carers often underachieve in the education system however; Warwickshire Young Carers believes this needn’t be the case. We believe in the importance of a successful and enjoyable education and desire that all Young Carers are given the best possible chance to achieve their full potential despite their caring responsibilities.

We have found that, on average, in a High School of 1,000 pupils there are at least 50 whose lives are in some way affected by the long-term illness or disability of someone close to them. Not all young carers will need support all of the time but, it is likely that many could benefit from some additional support, both from their school and from Warwickshire Young Carers.

We have found that many young people do not wish to discuss their caring responsibilities with friends and teachers through fear of isolation, stigma and bullying. However, with the right supportive environment this needn’t be the case. Staff already work closely with a number of schools and educational professionals to help raise awareness of the needs of Young Carers and to support individual needs to help reduce the impact of caring responsibilities on their education.

Staff can provide support to schools in a number of ways to help raise the awareness of the needs of Young Carers and to help support individual needs. This could be through early help meetings, staff meetings, information sessions or assemblies. To discuss any details of how we might be able to help support your school to support the Young Carers who attend please contact us.

Another way that we can support schools is through the Warwickshire Young Carers Schools Award programme.

Warwickshire Young Carers Schools Award

The Warwickshire Young Carers Schools Award aims to encourage and support schools to work toward provision of a high standard of support for Young Carers attending their school. The primary objective is to improve the experience; attendance and attainment of Young Carers in their education so that they might go on to achieve their full potential despite the added responsibilities they must face.

It is hoped that by completing this award schools will be better equipped to support students with caring responsibilities to reach their potential whilst also providing for their individual needs. Completion of this award could help a Young Carer make an informed decision on which school to attend if they have a choice.
